Insulin Potentiation Therapy (IPT)

My chiropractor is very excited about this as a cutting edge treatment.

"Insulin Potentiation Therapy (IPT) - Alternative Cancer Chemotherapy that is Gentle, without major side effects...

IPT is insulin potentiation therapy, a non-diabetic use of the hormone insulin to dramatically improve effectiveness and delivery of standard medications. IPT has an outstanding 135 doctor-year track record (115 years for cancer) over 72 years, and is ready for clinical trials and widespread use.
Cancer treatment with IPT is reported to be gentler, safer, more effective, and less expensive, with no surgery, no radiation, and usually no side effects. "

Well, as expected, there seem to be real mixed reviews about Insulin Potentiation Therapy.... Here's a summary:

There is an IPTQ website that is very positive about the approach. There is also a book, Treating Cancer with Insulin Potentiation Therapy (2002, Bueland Press) written by a doctor and dietitian who use the treatment regularly.

On the other hand, the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center has a fully disclaimered section of its site about Herb, Botanicals, and other Products. The information is readable and referenced. They say "Insulin Potentiation Therapy (IPT) is a questionable cancer therapy that uses insulin as an adjunct agent to potentiate the effect of chemotherapy and other medications." Read more.... They warning about hypoglycemia, so I wonder how the treatment would work with a diabetic?

What's scary about this treatment is that the site that comes up first in a Google search is "Why You Should Stay Away from Insulin Potentiation Therapy (IPT)," on the Quackwatch home page, written in 2003 by the president of the National Council Against Health Fraud - definitely not a fan of alternative medicine. This website has a section called "A Special Message for Cancer Patients Seeking "Alternative" Treatments" which IS worth looking at....

I don't have a problem with chiropractics, herbal remedies, acupuncture, etc. for healing/helping non-fatal health problems. I'm probably overly cautious about alternative treatments for cancer... Family lore - My mother got an eye infection (from a staple at work) when she was in her early 40s during the "enlightened 1950s." Supposedly, her doctor tried a new (alternative) treatment for the eye infection: milk injections. Evidently the milk injections triggered her rare (and fatal) immune disease. In her case, her MD tried an alternative treatment - for unknown reasons - that made an infection fatal. (BTW, according to my MD, they still don't know what causes that immune disease.)
